June 27, 202011:10 Qyburn may have been doing surgery, but it sounded closer to vivisection, which would get someone kicked out.
19:30 Rock survived until the septons wrote things down, everything came by word of mouth. That's something I am surprised you never mentioned, although it makes little difference. If our world was destroyed today and thousands of years from now archeologists dug up our world, they might say we are a stone age people by our own standards. Everything will have rotted away but the stone we use for carve monuments.
30:23 Yeen has always bothered me; the stone the city is built from the world book describes could have been made from dragonfire like Valirian roads or the base of Hightower. Did the Great Empire of the Dawn or Valria try heading south, or was there a dragon empire before Great Empire and there was another apocalypse?

June 27, 2020I like the theory that the oily black stone is petrified black weir wood /shade of the evening and the bones of Naga are white weir wood ships ribs. The trees are carnivores which drink blood and use their psychic influence to keep people at war. I also like the idea that the planet is earth knocked off it's axis to the point where north south is now east and west. It would explain the weird names of the essos and westeros if they were a deliberate ruse.

June 27, 2020The Black stone couldn't be Plastic as it would be unable to hold the weight of the massive tower standing upon it, also plastic isn't oily apart from the greasy bastards that use it for everything even tho its cancerous and crap. haha American adventures(asset stripping a nation) in iraq, funny.

June 27, 2020I think it is our earth,, billion years after an HP lovecraft style gods destroyed our society at its most advanced point, and the entire planet was destroyed, and genetic creatures, and some of our culture survived, and this is what the world became. But I think it all is based on magic, that magic maybe exists in this world due to nano tech, or maybe its just two gods who are the power source for magic, with the night king and the 3 eyed raven being avatars for these gods, and they are eternally at war, and that is what destroyed our civilization. Like Christ and the anti Christ.

June 27, 2020So I paused this to consider the idea of black oily stone being plastic and realised something – isn't gendry's hammer in the show made of what looks to be black oily stone? That explains why he can wield such a ridiculously heavy weapon, it's plastic.

June 27, 2020Anyway, one theory says planetos was a discovered planet inhabited by primitive CotF, and human spacefarers discover them. Settle nd study these xenos. Maybe humans took samples of the weirtrees, made experiments that somehow damaged it… and conflict ensued. And somewhere along the line the telepathic CotF took over the minds of starship captains that blasted the human colonies to dust and then self-destructed.
But some stuff survived like the valyrian colony of genelabs (making dragons!). geothermal power etc.
And pretty much only those staying below ground survived.
Like the winterfell crypts and they lived below until finally digging the way up explaining how come the older bodies are below the newer.. digging up as opposed to digging down.
victor bruun
June 27, 2020Not just the walls of qarth…. the same is done with the stark crypts. They too are built bass ackwards.
As in the oldest part are the deepest and have collapsed (with a possible dragon down there)… while Eddard is buried pretty close to the surface.

June 27, 2020Damn you Preston, for not paying a lector to check your grand and complex work!
Anyway, if anyone else had the problem: at 14:53 it's not from Tyrion VII, ASOS, but Tyrion VII ADWD instead.

June 27, 2020It's pretty obvious by the context of the story that the Gaia Hypothesis is really, really effective on Planetos (probably due to sentient-level weirwood trees) and the COTF can dramatically alter the planet's climate by chatting with their tree network, raising the ocean at will essentially and probably other things.
Berserkasaurus Rex
June 27, 2020Clearly ASOIAF is 100% pure fantasy, because if it was Science Fiction, some genetic engineer would've added arms to the dragons.

June 27, 2020I always love Preston's work. But I wanted to press back slightly on his realistic dragons don't have arms. I will caveat with its an example involving an insect, but …. https://www.facebook.com/DIYNeuro/videos/242777896292719/

June 27, 2020My thoughts on the red commet are: it is just a random commet which entered the orbit of planetos, and then was overinterpreted by the inhabitants

June 27, 2020hi Preston, better late than never but did the quote at 20.39 (bran3 adwd) is kinda the children telling us they arrived, they land on this world a thousand thousand year ago?
Cause that's a very very stange way to say "since we exist/since we got memory(hive mnd a guess)". Is this a casual slip of a clue on S-F ASoIaF? or that the children are Essos , or other continent, of origin?
Maelum
June 27, 2020you say it would take millions of years for the possible ships that you talked about to turn to stone, but for naga's bones, there are hints that it is made from weirwood and weirwood only needs a couple thousand years to turn to stone, unlike normal trees.

June 27, 2020It is interesting to be a science lover who writes fantasy fiction. In the end, you want to make things as real as possible even when the story is about magic. But you have to put the magic over the science for the story.
GRM's dragons have correctly formed wings but still, it could never fly. The tail is all wrong. The wings are probably too small for the amount of mass involved. The two smaller dragons burst through a wall in the place they were chained up. That requires mass, a lot of mass.
The point being that in a story that uses magic, you must cast off the science in a number of places because in literature, magic always beats science, opposite of the real world.
Wights, zombies, vampires and other resurrected reanimated dead folks, require magical explanations.
