Hello everyone, in this GameMaker Studio 2 Tutorial video we cover how to make a simple splash screen or start screen for your games. This is partly an image editing tutorial and how to use some cool features of Photoshop as well as how to turn those images into animations inside of GameMaker Studio 2. I’ll show you how to make a restart game button and how to make the game stay on the start screen until the player presses enter. We talk about persistance, why and when you need to use it, and and on what objects. We also talk about how the game loads maps, and how to quickly navigate from one map to another map. I’ll show you the way I stay organized by making folders and quickly go over project pathing. I show you how to quickly minimize all the menus on the workspace of GMS2, and some other various tips and tricks.

How can I, say, make it move to the next room automatically after a certain amount of time (or after sprite animation completes)?

I would've made a particle system for this, then you don't need all those frames which will clog up your games texture page.

great tutorial man!! i used this code i came up with (with help from people of the gamemaker discord server) to make the press… object fade in and out hope someone finds it useful

if (fadeout == true)
{
image_alpha = clamp(image_alpha – 0.01, 0, 1);
if (image_alpha == 0) fadeout = false;
}
else
{
image_alpha = clamp(image_alpha + 0.01, 0, 1);
if (image_alpha == 1) fadeout = true;
}

you just need to add a create event that states

fadeout = true;

I actually thought the picture you had as a background was a painting in a wall! That sure is an interesting texture.

I have been using MS paint for years. I have hear of Gimp but not real thought about using it. Trying to use new software I know will take time. I guess Life is one constant learning curve. you make GMS 2 very easy to learn, with some C/C++ background helps because they are similar. keep up the excellent work. thumb

You should use the resource names of your rooms when going to a specific one instead of hard coding the index number. For example, room_goto(rm_01). Using rm_01 in this instance will return the correct index of that given resource, regardless if you changed the order in the editor. Resource names are treated as constants in that regard. Do not write it as a string.

When you switch the order of any resource, Gamemaker automatically adjusts the index for each resource of that type, starting with 0, and incrementing the index as the list goes down. The first room listed is always loaded first. So if you place rm_01 above rm_00, Gamemaker will load rm_01 first. Keeping that in mind, that's why I always use the first room as the initialization room in my projects, and appropriately name it rm_initialize.

So, just some tips.

Just a suggestion buddy: Don't use all those all those effects on your text on photoshop, I used to do the same when I started graphic design and it looks pretty bad to everyone except yourself, I've been there haha. Try to keep it simplistic.

Great video. Will definitely use some of your tutorials in the future.
